2024 ACGA Excellence in Genetics Education Award

The ACGA Excellence in Genetics Education Award recognizes those who have made essential and fundamental contributions to genetics education recognized nationally or internationally, with the track of achievements in teaching and training genetic professionals, demonstrated initiatives and commitments in organizing genetics education activities, and publicizing genetics knowledge.

The recipient of the 2024 ACGA Excellence in Education Award is Dr. Yun-Fai Chris Lau. Dr. Lau’s career is a remarkable testament to dedication, innovation, and mentorship in human genetics and molecular biology.

Dr. Lau is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where he has built an outstanding career spanning over four decades. His groundbreaking research on the Y chromosome and its role in human development and disease has significantly advanced our understanding of sex determination and sexual dimorphisms. His pioneering work on genes such as SRY and TSPYhas not only impacted scientific knowledge but has also paved the way for advancements in clinical applications, influencing fields as diverse as oncology and reproductive health.

However, Dr. Lau’s impact extends far beyond his research. As a dedicated educator, he has mentored countless students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty members, many of whom have gone on to make their own contributions to science and medicine. Dr. Lau’s commitment to education led him to shape medical programs abroad, including his work as an External Examiner at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Through his teaching and mentoring, he has shaped generations of geneticists who continue to benefit from his guidance and insight.

Dr. Lau has also been a leader within the ACGA, serving as President and actively promoting our mission of fostering collaboration among Chinese geneticists. His extensive involvement in the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America has provided a platform for young scientists to thrive and connect with the broader scientific community. As the Editor-in-Chief of Cell & Bioscience, Dr. Lau has played an instrumental role in elevating the journal’s prominence, ensuring the global dissemination of impactful genetic research.

Dr. Lau’s contributions to research, education, and service have been nothing short of extraordinary, and it is our great privilege to honor him with the 2024 ACGA Excellence in Education Award.
